From Miami to Peru, Argentina to Australia, if you listen closely you'll hear the sound of a debauched hostel party in full swing
Fiddling while Rome -- or is it Greece? -- burns at The Pink Palace.
Forget about Greece’s economic woes for a moment. No one seems to be crying about it into their ouzo at The Pink Palace on the Greek island of Corfu.
Once the popular haunt of Queen way-out-in-front-man Freddie Mercury, who gifted it its name, this hostel is an institution, as well as a well-known hedonistic oasis.
There is a 24-hour cocktail bar, along with a beach bar complete with a Jacuzzi chill-out area. An on-site nightclub also caters to the masses that congregate there for the popular Saturday night Pink Toga parties.
If you’re really keen, also check out the Booze Cruise with cliff jumping (“sometimes naked”), Ouzo Cup volleyball, matchmaker nights and pajama parties.
Beds start from about US$26 per night.
Yay -- tiny glasses of mouthwash for everyone.
It’s hard to imagine what the ancient Incas would make of the escapades taking place today at Loki Hostel in the old Incan capital of Cusco.
Once a derelict building, the 450-year-old colonial mansion was converted into a hostel by some backpackers a few years ago.
And these days, it has become a popular stopping-off point in its own right for those on their way back from the nearby “lost city” of Macchu Picchu.
After slogging it out on the trail, booze-starved trekkers finally get to take their boots -- and more -- off at the hostel’s notorious late-night themed fiestas.
Don’t miss the ABC party (where Anything But Clothes goes) and the Gender Bender (where guys dress as girls and vice versa).
With stays as cheap as a stiff drink, the Loki is also good value.
Beds start from US$8.
The Flying Pig on "make like you're in a bad 3D movie" night.
After imbibing the cheap booze on tap (and making a quick run to the local coffee shop), that’s probably what you’ll be seeing by the end of the night -- flying pigs.
Situated next to Amsterdam Central Station on the edge of the red-light district, Flying Pig’s flagship Downtown Hostel is smoky, loud, whiffy and widely known as party central.
The bar is always full and DJs from around the world come to spin the decks for the crowds three times a week.
There’s also the “happy room” pillow lounge downstairs, where red-eyed backpackers gather at all hours of the night.
Also take advantage of the free shuttle service to the sister beach hostel in the Noordwijk, 25 kilometers outside Amsterdam.
Lesser known, but equally chilled out, this hostel offers an all-night open bar and is quickly earning a party reputation all of its own.
Beds from around US$37 per night.
Whereas the Brits are a touch more reserved. Just wait until 11 p.m., though ...
St. Christopher’s Village won’t win any prizes for aesthetics, but that doesn’t matter. Its party-centric vibe -- and prime location -- is what makes it a winner for young backpackers.
Just around the corner from the London Eye, the chain’s flagship hostel has a late-license nightclub, chill-out room, cinema, comedy club, sauna and rooftop hot tub.
Daily theme parties -- including karaoke, 1980s and 1990s nights -- are also in store for adventurous travelers.
And conveniently enough, it’s attached to the neighborhood Belushi’s Bar, which serves cheap food and booze until 2 a.m. weekdays and even later on the weekends.
Beds start from about US$20 per night.
Uh-oh -- somebody's forgotten how to take a bubble bath by himself.
XXX Hostel is more like it.
Owned by a young Italian-Irish guy, the hostel is housed in a large villa near the popular party resort Golden Sands. And the parties are extreme.
Think 500-person pub crawls and themed party nights where scantily clad ladies and gentlemen roll around in hot foam. Like you do. Plus, the beer is so cheap it’s practically free.
This place is so crazy, it has a cult following. According to its owner, at last count 108 people have tattooed an “X” somewhere on their bodies.
Its sister hostel in Bucharest is threatening to take over the “wildest” title with a larger pub, sauna and Jacuzzi.
Beds start from about US$16 per night.
Beach + booze + hormone-ravaged party people = photos just like this one.
The name says it all. Set in the coastal town of Lagos, The Rising Cock is wild and naughty, steadily racking up praise on the European party hostel since opening in 2004.
Owned by two Portuguese-American brothers, it started out in a three-bedroom apartment, where up to 30 people would sleep “on the floor, on the couch, in hammocks or even on a freezer.”
These days, however, the digs are significantly more spacious.
Guests can choose between five facilities located within a short walk of the beach, including a girls-only hostel for female guests who can’t handle “the craziness of the Cock.”
Booze cruises (US$6), “all-you-can drink” sessions and beach parties are also on the agenda.
And don’t miss out on the famed crepe breakfast -- a “proven cure” for the severest of hangovers.
Beds start from about US$36 per night.
And we thought Aussies were cultured these days.
Don’t expect a good night’s sleep at Base.
Nightly parties held in its downstairs bar, right underneath the dorm rooms, mean that noise pulsates through the walls at all hours of the night.
On the flipside, there’s really no reason to sleep with all the fun to be had.
Right in the heart of Melbourne’s buzzing St Kilda beachside suburb, the newly built hostel has a distinctly hip party vibe with swish cocktails on the menu and modern decor.
Chill-out areas, an Asian/Thai restaurant and TV lounge also offer backpackers some style and comfort.
For ladies there are the “sanctuary floors” -- an upmarket girls-only zone with plush bathrooms, full-length mirrors and Egyptian cotton towels and sheets.
Beds start from about US$26 per night.
Pah -- call that a hostel? More like a strategy session at a chess convention.
Talk about location: this boutique hostel is in the middle of Miami’s party-mad art deco district. It’s just a few steps from South Beach and its clubs, restaurants and shopping.
Recently refurbished with a plush modern look, the hostel includes a sleek lobby (art deco, of course), on-site club, lounge and an outdoor terrace for people watching.
The staff also organizes daily group outings with VIP entrance to bars and clubs, as well as Hummer party limousines.
On top of that, all meals are included. No wonder this place consistently gets rave reviews.
Beds start from US$29 per night.
Either security problems at the local jail or a regular night at Milhouse.
Milhouse’s reputation for fun and debauchery got so out of hand a few years back, rumor has it the owners were forced to try and bring things down a notch. If that’s the case, it didn’t work.
This hostel remains firmly established as Buenos Aires’ premier party hostel, just blocks from Plaza de Mayo and the bohemian barrio of San Telmo.
It’s housed in an impressive five-story 19th-century building, with the first-floor lounge usually packed with guests partying at the bar before heading out to the discotecas -- and again after their return.
It’s so popular that owners recently opened a second hostel around the corner on the Avenida de Mayo.
Just be forewarned: this popular hostel does get booked up so be sure to make reservations at least 48 hours in advance.
Beds start at US$15 per night.
See? You CAN laugh when you're slumming it.
Before you even get the chance to put your bags down at this Berlin institution, you get a courtesy “welcome drink” at check-in. Now that’s hospitality.
It’s also a pretty good indicator of what’s in store for you at Wombat's City Hostel in Berlin’s central Mitte district.
Part of a successful chain, this newly built house is a standout, consistently receiving top marks for its party atmosphere, location and squeaky-clean living quarters since opening in 2008.
It’s fully equipped with its own restaurant, guest kitchen and bar. There’s also a rooftop terrace where guests congregate for sausage sizzles and to take in the panoramic views of Berlin’s skyline.
Beds start from US$15 during low season.
